Nickel Photochemical Etching

ChemTecUSA specializes in precision nickel photochemical etching for aerospace, medical device, electronics, and industrial applications. Our Rhode Island facility produces complex, burr-free nickel components with tolerances to ±0.0005 inches, from prototype quantities through production volumes.

Photochemical Etching Process

Nickel photochemical etching utilizes controlled chemical dissolution to remove material without the need for mechanical force or heat, thereby eliminating the stress, distortion, and tooling costs associated with conventional machining. Nickel’s strength, corrosion resistance, and fine-grained structure enable the production of complex, burr-free components with intricate features, such as thin walls, microapertures, and fine slots, that other methods cannot achieve.

Material Properties and Performance

Corrosion Resistance

Nickel offers excellent resistance to oxidation and chemical attack in environments that involve moisture, solvents, and industrial atmospheres. The photochemical etching process maintains these inherent material properties throughout fabrication.

Dimensional Stability

Chemical material removal can preserve flatness and dimensional accuracy across the entire part. This stability is essential for components such as diaphragms, EMI/RFI shielding, lead frames, and sensor elements where precise tolerances must be maintained.

Surface Quality

Etched nickel surfaces are smooth and burr-free with uniform etch depth across the sheet. This consistency supports subsequent operations, including plating, bonding, welding, and coating applications. Our team offers matte, polished, and plated finishes so you can match your part’s performance and visual requirements.

Process Advantages

Nickel photochemical etching delivers a distinct manufacturing edge by combining photolithography with chemical precision to produce detailed, stress-free components ideal for advanced applications. The benefits of this process can be seen across multiple performance categories:

Geometric Complexity

Produces intricate features, including thin walls, micro-apertures, fine slots, and complex patterns that are not achievable through conventional methods.

Material Integrity

No mechanical stress, work hardening, or heat-affected zones. Material properties remain unchanged throughout the process.

Production Flexibility

Consistent process from prototype through production volumes—no retooling required for volume scaling.

Edge Quality

Burr-free edges eliminate secondary deburring operations. Clean geometry suitable for direct assembly or post-processing.

Two-Sided Features

Capability for registered patterns on both sides of the material in a single process cycle.

Post-Processing Options

Etched nickel components accommodate various finishing operations:

  • Electroplating (gold, tin, silver, copper)
  • Passivation treatments
  • Custom coatings
